Distinguished Young Women (aka: Jr. Miss)

At the last Roper family dinner at our house Kate was selling tickets to some performance she was going to be in on April 30th. Being the nice uncle and aunt we are we purchased 2 tickets.
Saturday evening we picked up my mom and drove to Alpine to eat at the Blue Lemon Restaurant. After dinner we drove to Alpine High School to attend the event. To our delight we learned that Kate was competing in the Distinguished Young Women competition (this used to be the Jr. Miss pageant.)

To our dismay we learned that there were 26 young women competing. Each one was to do an interview, physical activity, and a talent. With a few short calculations we knew we were in for a long evening. Kate was one of 9 girls competing from Highland and American Fork. There were 17 young women competing from Alpine and Cedar Hills. So this was actually two competitions being held at the same time.
The competition consisted of a group physical fitness activity, an individual short talk about what they have gained from the core values of DYW, and a 90 second talent presentation. (I was so hoping someone would ask them what their idea of the 'Perfect Date' was.)

There was a lot of singing and piano playing. One girl did a sewing presentation and my favorite, the girl from the Science Academy did an attached unit rifle drill. I was disappointed there were no baton twirlers.
There were some impressive young women and some very good singers and piano players. Kate did a nice job but to her dads relief she did not win the competition so she doesn't need any more new clothes and won't have to go compete at the state finals. We were home around 11:30 so it was a long but enjoyable evening.
