Saturday evening Susie and I attended the BYU vs. Santa Clara basketball game in the Marriott Center. Over the years the pregame show has evolved into quite a spectacle. I guess if the basketball team was better we wouldn't need so much hype before the event. (Obviously I'm a little jaded)
For this game they sold large styrofoam light sticks so that when the lights were dimmed the arena looked like this.
Then they drop the curtains and do the highlight show and introduce the starting line up for the Cougars.
During the last Media timeout of the game (after the 4 minute mark in the game) they dim the lights again, crank up the music and the beat, bring out the flags and spread a huge block 'Y' over the student section. This really gets the students going. I'm not sure how much it helps the basketball team as they usually go a little nuts after that time out because of all the excitement.
Last night the Cougars had a 23 point lead at the break so it didn't hurt them too bad though the did score just 5 points in the last 5 minutes of the game. Luckily Santa Clara didn't do any better. The highlight of the evening was Tyler Haws passing Danny Ainge to become the 2nd leading scorer in BYU history. Only the Jimmer has more points.
